Egglestone Abbey

Date: Thursday, 5 January 2012
Area: Barnard Castle, County Durham

It was a lovely afternoon today, if you managed to keep out of the chilly winds. So I decided to pay a visit to the ruins of the old abbey at Egglestone. Which sit on the banks of the River Tees a mile or so downstream from Barnard Castle. I wasn't sure how good a venue it would be for a sunset, but it's been on my list of places to check out for a while now so off I went. The sun was starting to low in the sky as I drove west along the A67 from home. I wasn't too concerned as it was only a 15 drive, as I pulled up in the car park the light on the abbey walls was amazing. I grabbed the camera and set off to see which were going to be the best angles. I quickly realised that the light was going to disappear behind a small hill before it actually set. This is one of the problems when you first go to a new location, you are never too sure about angles/lighting etc. To be honest I think I should have been there about half an hour earlier. It wasn't a wasted trip though as I checked out the sunrise/sunset positions and it's probably a better sunrise spot.
