Brothers Water

Date: Tuesday, 18 January 2011
Area: Patterdale, Eastern Lake District

The forecast for Tuesday was looking good, with bright sunny spells over the east of the Lake District with some early morning valley fog. So it was an early start from home to get to Cow Bridge at Brothers Water for sun rise. My plan was to head off up to Angle Tarn from there, to see if I could get some nice shots after my previous visit a few weeks ago to when I failed to get the 'Sunrise shots' I was after. As I drove alongside Ullswater there was no sign of any low lying fog and the sky was pretty cloudy, not much like the forecast. There was some lovely colours appearing in the cloudy sky though from the rising sun. I thought that a quick walk along to Brothers Water might be worth while as there was very little wind. I wasn't wrong the lake was flat calm and the reflections were almost perfect. I spent much longer than planned there, I even walked down to the south end of the lake to get some shots back towards Brock Crags. If it hadn't have been for the breeze that picked up I probably spent all day there! After a coffee stop by the lake I decided to change the plan, and rather than heading off to Angle Tarn, I would pay visit into Dovedale. It's many year's, somewhere near to 30 in fact since I've actually walked along Dovedale Beck. We used to have lots of family holidays in the area and a favourite was to have a picnic along side the stream. I wasn't sure I'd recognise much after all those years, so I was really surprised to come across the exact same spot! There are some lovely waterfalls in the beck, and the temptation was far too much for me, so it was out with the tripod and filters. After exhausting the waterfall shots I headed further up into Dovedale. The views were now dominated by Dove Crag, which was my first 'Wainwright' fell, climbed way back in 1975. I really like this view of Dove Crag as it's only by viewing it from this side do you get to see the dramatic crag that gives it it's name. After a bit more exploring I headed back towards Brothers Water, this time taking the upper path that stays above the intake wall all the way back to Hartsop Hall, and then a simple stroll back alongside the lake and the car.
