River Tees Flood

Date: Saturday, 5 February 2011
Area: High Coniscliffe, County Durham

The weather over the last few days had been awful, with very strong winds and heavy rain. I was almost happy that I couldn't go out very far, with the car in the garage getting a fault on the power steering looked at. The weather this morning was loads better, with even a hint of blue sky and sun. So I decided to put my wellies on and have a walk along the river to see what damage had occurred from this latest storm. Well it was no surprise to see the river level so high, after all of the rain over the last couple of days. I would say the river was about 8 feet above normal, and it was apparent that it had been much higher overnight and the level was actually dropping. Seeing how high the river was I knew it wasn't a good idea to go along our normal dog walk, as the path through the woods would probably flooded. This was confirmed when I got to the point in the second photo, which is where the river has breached the flood defences, the path was running in water. You can see the new path the river is starting to cut across the fields to an old stream bed on the other side of the field and then back to the river. This started a few months ago and each time the river floods a little more of the bank is eroded away. The water directly in front of where I was standing is filling a huge hole. Last time I was down there it was about 9 feet deep, I wouldn't want to fall into it. The power of mother nature never fails to amaze me at how quickly it can move hundreds of tonnes of soil and rock in such a short time?
