It had been a bitterly cold night at Lobuche, I had managed to sleep a little bit during the night, even though I'd a pounding headache. We all hoped that the cloud would lift today so we could see the views from base camp. It started off promising enough, but our hopes were soon dashed. As we crossed the Changri Glacier, heading for Gorak Shep the cloud engulfed us and the wind really picked up. By the time we had reached the lodge it was bitterly cold and there were a few odd flakes of snow starting to fall. After a quick bite to eat we headed off very slowly towards base camp. The lack of views and the cold wind made it a miserable two hour trudge for me. To be truthful I was a little disappointed when we actually reached base camp, I'm not sure what I was expecting. All that was there were a few piles of stones and tattered prayer flags. We spent about half an hour taking photos and having a look round before heading back to the lodge. There were no stunning views of the mountains that towered 10,000 feet above us. The only clues that we got that there was anything out there in the murky greyness was the occasional thundering crash from an avalanche somewhere on the slopes around us.
It had been a bitterly cold night, I wasn't surprised at the dusting of snow that greeted us in the morning!
Lobuche village with Taboche Peak and Cholatse behind
Lobuche Peak towering above the village
The hazy sun over Mehra Peak gave us some hope that the cloud would lift
Heading out of the village towards Gorak Shep
The rocky pinnacles of Lobuche Peak
A glimpse of Changri (6027 metres) through the murk as we arrived at Gorak Shep
Kala Pattar, we had planned an early morning ascent of this to watch the sun rise over Everest
Playing in the sand of the dry lake bed, beside Gorak Shep
The icy and rocky waste land that is the Khumbu Glacier
There wasn't much of a view as we headed along the edge of the glacier towards base camp
The small lakes on the glacier were an amazing colour
Base Camp reached at 5300 metres!!!!!!
There wasn't a huge amount to see apart from the cairns and prayer flags
There were no views of the mountains that towered above us!
We weren't actually allowed to walk out that far onto the glacier itself as it protected
Crossing the rough terrain wasn't that easy
This a a panoramic view I took on the was down. The small group of people on the left of the photo should give you a sense of scale
