Everest Base Camp - Day 6

Date ... Friday, 4 September 2009
Start ... Tengboche (altitude - 3870 metres)
Finish ... Pheriche (altitude - 4240 metres)
Time taken ... 6 hours 0 mins (including stops)

Stunning, awesome, breathtaking .... these are a few of the words I would use to describe the view we were treated to when the bells sounded at 5 am to call the monks to prayers. After the previous few days of frustration with the cloud masking the high mountains, the early morning air was cold and clear. I couldn't get my camera out of its case fast enough, I took dozens of photos hanging out of the bedroom window, before putting my boots on and heading outside. Everyone was out with their camera's clicking away, and I didn't blame them, it was freezing cold, as the sun hadn't broken over the tops of the mountains, but I don't anyone was bothered. The walk along the valley to Pheriche seemed to fly by, the height gain was a lot less than the previous day, and the altitude was starting to effect a few folks by now. But the stunning views of the highest mountains in the world towering above us easily took our minds off any of that. It was only late in the afternoon as we got above the tree line for the first time, that the cloud came down again. Fingers crossed that wasn't our last views of the mountains!

The view that greeted me when I opened the bedroom window, one that will stay in my memory for a long time!
