On our last day in Nepal we had a free day to relax, so we decided to do a little bit of sightseeing around Kathmandu. Getting around the city is an interesting experience so we hired a local guide and mini bus to make things a little easier. We first went to the Monkey Temple at Swayambhunath, followed by a walk through the old Kathmandu City at Durbar Square. Our final visit was to the Hindu Temple at Pashupatinath, were they cremate the bodies on the banks for the river. It was a really interesting day looking around the temples, but I found Kathmandu to be chaotic to say the least. Getting anywhere in the city is crazy, there doesn't appear to be any rules on the roads, people just drive how and where they like. You need eyes in the back of your head as you are wandering around, and they all seem to drive round blasting their horns just for the fun of it!!!!!!
The entrance to the Monkey Temple at Swayambhunath
There were plenty of monkeys, but I couldn't get one to pose for me
They seemed more interested in finding bits of food to eat
To reach the temple there is a flight of very steep steps to climb
One of the many colourful statues of Buddah
A close up view, the colours were really vivid
Not a striking as the gold leaf on the temple at the top of the steps though!
Looking out over Kathmandu City
There were lots of smaller temples and stalls surrounding the main temple
Butter lamps in the monastery
One of the hundreds of carvings to be seen
There were also loads of colourful ornaments to buy on the stalls
The monkeys ate the offerings people placed by the statues and shrines
This little one had its eye on something?
Prayer flags by the hundreds
They really did make the place very colourful
Walking through the busy streets of old Kathmandu
Part of the old water supply network to the city, for some people this is still their only water supply
Approaching Durbar Square
Its a very busy area with loads of small shops and markets
Durbar Square, with King Pratap's Malla Column in the centre
Chyasin Dega
One of the colourful Sidar's, they like to pose for money!
Kakeshwor Temple
The gates into the temple
This tree has grown around a shrine so is classed as a 'holy tree'
Kumari-ghar, the home of the 'Living God'
Its decorated all over with these fine cravings which are hundreds of years old
Looking down onto one of the many street markets from the roof top cafe where we had our lunch
Open air cremations at Pashupatinath
This is the Hindus holiest temple
I wasn't very comfortable in been there
