I'd know from the first day of the trek that this final days walking was going to be the hardest one of the trip. First of all there was the steep 600 metre descent from Namche Bazaar. Then there were a number of rivers to cross, which usually involved a fair amount of up and down. Finally the last section of the trail from Phadking to Lukla was all up hill! It wasn't actually as bad as I'd expected, probably all of the training that I'd done leading up to the trek helped. The only really bad bit about the day was the weather, not long after we made it to the bottom of the steep descent from Namche the rain arrived. It chucked it down all the way back to Lukla, normally I can manage to keep the camera in a dry bag to grab a few photo's, not today it ended up going into its protective case and wrapped in a dry bag inside my bag. Regardless of what the weather was doing it was brilliant coming round the final corner into Lukla, seeing the archway that we walked through many days before was the one of the best sights on the trip. I actually ended up running up the last hundred metres, I huffed and puffed for ages afterwards but I didn't care, we'd done it! We were all totally soaked to the skin, but don't think any one cared. As soon as we got to the lodge I was straight to the bar, not having had an alcoholic drink for nearly two weeks was more than enough excuse to order a bottle or two to celebrate!
The very colourful chorten at the bottom of Namche Bazaar
As we started the descent the clouds were starting to fill the valley below
It wasn't a good sign so early in the morning, looked like rain could be on the way
Looking down onto the river far below, our path along side of it can just be made out
Looking back at the suspension bridge high above the river. Not long after this photo the rain arrived!
