Bamburgh Beach

Sunday 15 February 2009

I couldn’t make my mind up where I wanted to walk on Sunday, I had thought about heading up into Swaledale somewhere, but I really didn’t fancy walking in thawing wet snow, so as something completely different to what we normally do, we drove up to the Northumberland coast for a walk on the beach. We parked beside Bamburgh Castle and after a short walk through the sand dunes we were down onto the beach, we didn’t had any real idea of what we were going to do, in the end we walked down the beach to Seahouses and back, probably about 6 miles in total. I think this stretch of coastline is one of the best in the country, there are miles of golden sand to walk along and the views out to the Farne Islands and holy Island are just lovely. With it been the start of the half term holidays the beach was really busy, but with the tide been out there was plenty of space for Tim to run about and not get under anyone’s feet.
He really does love the beach, he just runs and runs all day, and the only thing that he still hasn’t learnt yet is not to drink the sea water! He spent most of his time running through the surf, he was soaked from head to toe, I didn’t mind as the sea water/sand does his fur and paws the world of good.
The weather forecast wasn’t exactly right, they had said that the skies would clear during the day along the east coast, so I had hoped to get a few nice sun set shots as we walked back along the beach. As it turned out the better shots that I ended up with were at the start of the walk when the cloud had broken a little to let some blue sky through, you can’t win them all!

Bamburgh beach is a dramatic place. I took parties of school children to Northumbria for the best part of 20 years. We mainly stayed at Whitley Bay, but one year we were based at Wooler.

We took the kids to the beach on the first night and I am sure that we were very surprised by the sun seting over the sea!! Must have been the way the coastline is there.

Have I remembered that correctly or am I going mad?

Derek - I don’t know the lay of the land that well up there, but it probably is possible for you to see the sun setting in some of the bays/inlets????

    Gary …

No, Derek you’re not going mad. You were probably in Beadnell, which has a west facing harbour. Sunsets on the water can look amazing there.

Thanks Gary for a most interesting website. Always good to have inspiration from someone else to vary the walks.
