Today's walk was in Swaledale, amongst the old lead mine working of Gunnerside Gill. It's a walk I've done many times before, but I was surprised to find that it had been two years since I last did this walk. Our last time doing the same walk was on a very cold and icy day in January 2009 The weather for today's visit was much nicer, almost 'Spring' like when you were out of the cold northerly breeze. Regardless of the time of year or weather, a walk along the gill is always a delight. Every time I go I always find something new that I've not seen before, in among the old mining ruins. However, one of the things that I spotted on today's walk was a bit more of a surprise!
Heading along the gill after leaving Gunnerside village
Gunnerside Beck had a milky look to it today, probably just a reflection of the sky?
Old field barns
The first part of the walk in through pastures on the east side of the gill
More field barns, very typical in this part of the dales
Heading onto the open moor and the first of the old mine workings
The dressing floor of the Sir Francis mine, where the lead ore was separated from the spoil
Tim leading the way along side the beck
The remains of the Sir Francis mine on the opposite side of the valley
Botcher Gill
Approaching the most heavily mined area of the gill
Looking along the gill towards the distant Blakethwaite smelt mill, the old flue can be seen going up the moorland behind
The whole area is covered in vast spoil heaps, it's been hundreds of years since the mines closed but very little has grown on them
Looking across at the Lowanthwaite Mine from the remains of the Bunton Mine
What's left of the old water wheel at the Bunton mine
The entrance to the Bunton level
This was a big surprise to see, a new cairn with a sword in the middle of it!
A close up of the inscription on the sword
Heading towards Blakethwaite smelt mill
The remains of the peat store, with the smelt mill behind and the line of the flue climbing steeply up the fellside
Gunnerside Beck
Looking back at the old buildings at the Blakethwaite smelt mill as I started back towards Gunnderside
This shot should give you a good idea of the extent of the mining around the Bunton mine?
The pastures and old buildings at the 'Winterings'
A wider angle view, my outward path was through the lower pastures
Finally back at Gunnerside village
