This was the first day of our February break in the Lakes, we had booked a cottage in the quiet village over Loweswater, on the western side of the national park. The weather forecast was lousy, with plenty of low cloud and rain throughout the day. Not a great start to the holiday, but it was nice to get a break, especially in a relatively new area for us. After arriving at the cottage and getting settled in, we donned the waterproofs and braved the cold damp weather for a walk around Loweswater lake. which despite the weather proved to be an very enjoyable afternoon stroll, definitely somewhere that's on our list for a repeat visit, preferably on a warm summers evening with a nice picnic!
On the way over to Loweswater we stopped off at the Whinlatter Forest visitor centre for a coffee.
The murky and damp view from the front of the cottage
The cloud was just touching the top of Mellbreak as we set off for the walk
Low Fell (right) and Darling Fell (left) neither looked very appealing today!

We were surprised to find Loweswater covered in a thin layer of ice
Low Fell reflections on the ice
The western end of the lake wasn't as frozen at the other end, maybe because this is where the water flowed into the lake?
Crossing the very wet and boggy fields to get onto the other side of the lake
A view back across Loweswater towards a cloud covered Blake Fell
Heading back to the village, the weather seemed to be getting worse, the surrounding fells are just about visible
Back at Rose Cottage, time for a hot cuppa and a soak in the bath!
