Hamsterley Forest is fairly close to where we live, only about 30 mins drive away. It's a great place to have a wander and stretch our legs, Tim really loves going there, especially as there plenty of things for him to sniff out. There's loads of parking areas along the forest drive, but we usually head for The Grove, once away from there we hardly see a sole, just a few MTB's.
The Grove parking area, a very popular spot, with visitors to the forest
I just love this old knarled oak tree at the back of the car park
Our normal route is over Kings Crag, but this is a working forest and that route is out of bounds today, so we walked along the Euden Beck valley today instead, both are lovely routes and end up in the same place
I was surprised to see these oak leaves still on the tree at this time of the year
Euden Beck, we would follow this stream for a couple of miles along the valley
Most of the walking was on forest roads like this one
Can you spot the heron?
It flew off before I could get a close up shot, I really do need a long telephoto lens!
The orange colours of last autumn were still holding on, but a few more weeks and the bright greens of spring will take over
Another view of Euden Beck
Heading up over the moors now towards Neighbour Moor, the highest point, and probably the most remote spot in the forest
Looks as if old Tim dog was going to sleep on this one, as if!
Something has caught Sheena's eye?
Oh it's this old tractor, looks to be stuck to me?
Looking out over the wild Pennine moorland from Neighbour Moor
Pennington Beech Wood, the highest one in England, supposedly?
Last years beech leaves looked stunning in the Spring sunshine
This seat on the corner of the wood is a great place for a coffee stop
Another view of the beech woods
Knarled old beech tree trunk, bet it would be spooky on a dark winters night?
Definitely signs that Spring is really here, frog spawn!
Mist rising through the forest as the sun reached the cold ground
Heading down through a more mature area of the forest, not much of view here
and back at The Grove, after a lovely Sunday morning stroll!
