This was the first of our walks in the Walks on The Howgill Fells book, it was also our first walk on The Howgill Fells for several years. We had picked this area with it been the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, the Lakes would have been nice, but far too busy. There's one thing you can generally rely on about walking in The Howgills, it won't be that busy. I think we must have met around 20 or so people while we were out, which considering this is probably the busiest route in the area wasn't that bad for a Bank Holiday?
The very quiet 'Main Street' in Sedbergh, as we headed to the fells
We followed the lane as far as Hill Farm before heading onto the open fell
Tim was his usual cheeky self!
Looking back down onto Sedbergh as we started the climb to The Calf
The first part of the climb was along the delightful Settlebeck Gill
The distant Garsdale valley with Baugh Fell on the left
Sheena and Tim in the gill, the gradient wasn't too bad, it was just a very long climb
Looking back down the gill
Why was I trying to balance on one leg????
Zooming in on the distant Whernside, the highest fell in Yorkshire
Towards the to of the gill we spotted these fell ponies, they are very common around here
A view back down Settlebeck Gill from where we joined the 'usual' route up from Sedbergh
The summit of winder from the same spot, we would go back over there on our return
The sun catching the summit of Crook, with Whernside and Great Coum in the distance
There was still a bit of snow left in places which Tim really enjoyed
There was also plenty of heavy hail/snow showers, which weren't forecast???
I think this photo sums up how much Tim dog enjoys been out on the fells, don't you agree?
The long ridges of The Howgill Fells, with the snow capped Lakeland mountains on the distance
Sheena heading towards the steep climb onto Calders
This is one of the very few fences to be found on the high fells in The Howgills
Looking back at Arant Haw as we started the climb to Calders
The summit of Calders with Wild Boar Fell in the distance
More passing showers over Yarlside
Sheena and Tim heading off Calders towards The Calf
Them again, looking rather cold and wet on the summit!
The view north from the trig point, with more heavy showers approaching, time to find some shelter for lunch!
What do you mean those buns were meant for both of us, didn't you bring your own????
Passing snow showers over Yarlside, from our sheltered lunch spot
The visibility turned really bad for a while as we retraced our steps over Calders
Luckily it didn't last too long
Snow showers over Whernside, which sits at the end of the lovely valley of Dentdale
Calders from Arant Haw
Looking across towards Fell Head (l) from Arant Haw
Descending off Arant Haw on our way towards Winder
Arant Haw from Winder
The trig point on Winder, usually a great viewpoint for the southern Lakeland fells, too many showers today though
Looking south towards Whernside, just visible through the showers, from Winder
The final descent back down into Sedbergh
Along the way we spotted this sheep with a blue rinse! LOL ....
When we got home Tim was keen to get his Eater presents, a nice chocolate egg a soft toy!
He watched very carefully as Sheena unwrapped the egg
Hmmm, chocolate!
Thank you I can deal with that all by myself now!
