This was the third walk of our long weekend in Borrowdale. The weather forecast was much better than the previous couple of days, with the overnight rain soon clearing to a warm and sunny day. I wanted to get a long walk in, practice for my trip to Nepal next weekend. I wasn't that bothered about going high, so I decided that a walk to Sty Head Tarn was the order of the day. The first part of the route was along the flat valley floor to Seathwaite Farm and then to Stockley Bridge. Our ascent route was up Grains Gill + Ruddy Gill to reach the foot of the crags on Great End. After a really pleasant lunch stop at Sprinkling Tarn to dropped down to Sty Head Tarn and then we followed the 'Corridor Route' down past Taylorgill Force back to the bridge. It was such a lovely afternoon we stopped at the farm for tea and cakes before walking back along the road to Rosthwaite.
Heading out of Rosthwaite village along the quiet lanes
The weather was definately looking better than the previous couple of days
We followed the same path as walk the day before for the first part of the walk, before heading down to the cottages at Mountain View where we headed towards Seathwaite Farm
Heading along the lane towards the farm
The views south along the Borrowdale valley were wonderful
Base Brown with Sourmilk Gill to the right
We eventually arrived at Seathwaite Farm, which nestles at the bottom of Sourmilk Gill
At the farm we joined the throngs of people heading towards Sca Fell Pike (?)
Seathwaite Fell, one of our objectives for the day, Sprinkling Tarn is up there
The day was turning out really nice, it was going to be a warm climb along the gill
At Stockley Bridge we headed off to the left along Grains Gill, we would come back along the right hand side path later in the day
The view as you climb the gill is dominated by the huge cliff face of Great End
Looking back down the gill, with Skiddaw in the far distance
The path becomes much steeper at the head of the gill
The path has been repaired in several sections which make the going a little easier
The stunning view north towards Derwent Water, Skiddaw and Blencathra
The imposing north face of Great End
At the top of the gill Great Gable comes into view
Glaramara from the top of the gill, with the slopes of Allen Crag on the right
Sprinkling Tarn and Great Gable
Great Gable from the tarn, with Windy Gap and Green Gable on the right
The view from our lunch stop beside the tarn
While we were having lunch a few braves soles to a dip in the tarn, they didn't stay in very long!
After lunch we headed down from Sprinkling Tarn towards Sty Head
The cloud base was low enough to catch the tops of the high fells every now and then
Eventually Sty Head Tarn comes into view
Sty Head Tarn with Green Gable and Base Brown (right) behind
Lingmell and the huge gash of Piers Gill
Lingmell with Sca Fell Pike to the left
The 'Corridor Route' curs diagonally across the fell side on the left to Lingmell Col
A sneak view down into Wasdale
Lingmell and Sca Fell Pike
The white building down in the valley is the Wasdale Head Inn, we stayed there before and the food and drink are great, but today our route is in the opposite direction back to Rosthwaite
A close up on Lingmell, there is a path along the left side of Piers Gill
Sty Head Tarn with Blencathra in the distance
It had turned out to be a lovely afternoon, plenty of blue sky and warm sun
Come on dad, it's time for a swim!
Sty Head Tarn with Seathwaite Fell to the right
Looking back at Sca Fell Pike from the tarn
Heading back down towards Stockley Bridge
The views down into Borrowdale very lovely
Taylorgill Force (Lakeland's second highest waterfall) is down on the left behind the tree's
Almost back down to the bridge, and time for tea and cakes at Seathwaite Farm
It gets really busy at Seathwaite at times, these cars are probably about a mile from the farm!
The cottages at Mountain View, which we passed earlier in the day
Looking over the fields to Grange Fell
Eagle Crag, means we are almost back to Rosthwaite
