Both myself and Sheena have been devastated about the horrendous weather and flooding the has hit the west coast this week. We've watched the TV reports and seen dozens of photo's of area's that we know so well submerged, in some cases, by several feet of water, finding it hard to take in. Luckily all of ours friends that live and work in Cumbria have managed to come through relatively unscathed. However, our thoughts and prayers go out to those less fortunate, especially the family of the brave policeman who was tragically killed trying to save the lives of others. If any one would like to make a donation to help those who have found themselves mixed up in all of this I think the following link would be helpful ... The Cumbria Community Foundation
Well we had planned to head over to the Lakes for a walk this week, but following the flooding we decided not to travel that far. The plan was to stay closer to home and try out the new GPS unit that I'd got for the camera. However, after opening the curtains and seeing the thick fog we decided to stay at home and have a wander along the river. We knew we'd had nothing like the rain that Cumbria had received on Thursday, but we were shocked to say the least when we saw how high the river had been, and the damage it had caused. The walk was only short, but it was a good test of the GPS, which geo-tags the positions I take each photo. I've just set up an account with 'Everytrails' which allows me to show the positions of the photo's overlaid onto a map. If you would like to see the locations of the photo's from this walk try this link, which will open a new window ... photo locations. I'm also going to start using the new Anquet Maps 'MARS' service which allows me to display the route information from my walks on an OS map. The good bit for me is that I won't have to purchase a licence, at great cost, to display the OS mapping on this site anymore. I also think it will be better for you as the maps are more interactive. Try the following link to see the route details for this walk, again it will open a new window, route information ... Well enough of my ramblings, now lets get on with the walk!
A grey and murky view of the church as we headed down onto the river bank
The river level had dropped back to somewhere near normal, but it had been level with path!
Me posing for the camera, not sure about the facial expression though? The new GPS unit is the white thing hanging round my neck
A close up on the GPS unit ... I'll be doing a write up on it very soon
There was lots of debris in the tree's, including several tree trunks
These leaf covered hawthorn bushes were odd sights, showed how high the water levels had been
Sheena checking out a large hole which has appeared in the embankment, it wasn't there last week
Me stood amongst the piles of stones that had left behind be floods
Looking out across the waterlogged fields
Even the fences had been flattened
It looked like the river had found an old route across this field?
This section of bank has been unstable for a while, but loads more has disappeared in the recent flood
Sheena walking through the woods. From the debris in the bushes, the water level would have been up to her shoulders!
Devastation in the woods
Piles of debris by the footbridge ....
