I'd not done this walk for well over 10 years, but my recent walk on the Deepdale Horseshoe remind me about it. Dove Crag was my very first 'Wainwright' summit, way back in the early 70's, and I did it by this route. We used to have family holidays on the camp site at the bottom of Kirkstone Pass so I used to get to do this route at least once a year, if not more. I personally feel that it's the best way to visit the summit of Dove Crag. Going via the Fairfield Horseshoe you miss all of the stunning scenery walking up along Dovedale. I'd be interested to hear what you think?

Kirkstone Pass on the left with Middle Dodd and Red Screes in the centre from the shores of Brothers Water
It didn't take Tim long to plunge into the water this morning!
It was really warm in the early morning sun, so the tree's alongside the lake provided some welcome shade
Looking back towards Angletarn Pikes (the twin peaks in the centre) from the south end of the lake
Tim was really enjoying been back out after missing the trip away last weekend
Just past Hartsop Hall you get the first view of Dove Crag, I left the main path here and headed right past the boulders
The remains of some old mine workings amongst the tree's
As you climb alongside the intake wall the views of Dove Crag just get better and better
Dove Crag with The Stangs in front and Hart Crag off to the right
This is my favourite view of Dove Crag, it's one people doing the Fairfield Horseshoe never get to see
Looking into Hunsett Cove at the base of the crag, my route was up the steep path to the right of the crag today
Looking back down Dovedale at the base of the steep path. The Stangs are on the right and Hartsop-above-How in front
At the top of the steep section you get a great view across to the Far Eastern Fells
Once I'd reached the main ridge, I was shocked to see the blanket of grey cloud approaching, it was meant to be a nice day!
Looking back to Hart Crag and the distant St. Sunday Crag as I walked towards the summit of Dove Crag
In the few minutes it had taken me to walk along the ridge to Dove Crag, Great Gable had disappeared into the cloud!
Looking south from the summit of Dove Crag towards Windermere
The view SE from the summit towards Red Screes and the distant Ill Bell
Looking towards the distant 'Roman Road' along the High Street ridge from a pool on Dove Crag
Heading towards the cairn on High Bakestones
Looking along Scandale towards Ambleside and Windermere
Tim sitting by the cairn on High Bakestones
Looking down from the cairn to my next targets for the day, Little Hart Crag and Scandale Tarn
Brothers Water viewed from the summit of Little Hart Crag
The delightful Scandale Tarn, the cairn on High Bakestones can be seen on the skyline
From the tarn I headed over to the top of Scandale Pass and then headed NE down through Caiston Glen
There were plenty of cars headed along the road towards Kirkstone Pass
Back down to the 'Intake' wall, the gate back into the fields as just by the tree's
Looking back at High Hartsop Dodd (right) and Middle Dodd (left) was we walked back across the meadows
Dove Crag and Hart Crag from the meadows, plus a couple of huge boulders! Left over from the last ice age????
Back down by Brothers Water again, there's a lot more ripple on the water now
Grey Crag with The Knott behind from the out flow of the lake, must be nearly back at the car park then!
