The weather forecast was much better for the eastern side of the country today, so we headed off over to the North Yorkshire Moors. I used to do loads of walking over there, but have neglected it over the few years, which is a great shame as its a wonderful place to walk. We did a repeat of the walk from August last year, walking over Urra Moor and Cold Moor from the top of Clay Bank. A lovely walk with some excellent views, but it can be very muddy, like most of the NYM after heavy rain .....
The route map from our walk
Looking back Hasty Bank as we climbed up Carr Ridge, you can just make out the path that we would descend later in the day
Tim was full of energy again and was enjoying his day out after missing yesterday
At the top of the steep climb we left the ridge and the Cleveland Way/C2C path and headed south
Along what remains of an ancient earthwork that runs around the eastern side of the valley
Looking down into the lovely Bilsdale valley
One of the many boundary stones that can be found on the moors, on the other side it was dated 1848
Very little remains of the earthwork apart from this ditch, which is full of heather, bracken and bleaberries
Running water is rare on the northern part of the moors so Tim need full use of this stream for a quick dip
Looking back along the earthwork after we had crossed the stream. The small speck on the horizon is the earlier boundary stone
Looking across the valley at Hasty Bank, its easy to spot this hill as its almost flat on top
The path was very wet in places from the heavy rain the previous day
Another view of Hasty Bank, with the summit of Cold Moor to the left
Heading down off the moors to cross the valley
The Bilsdale transmitter, a very dominant feature of the moors, it is several miles away but still very visible!
As we headed down into the hamlet of Seave Green the lane was full of foxgloves
A typical cottage on the North Yorkshire Moors, made from local sandstone with red pan tile roofs
Tim having fun in the meadow as we started the climb back up the other side of the valley
Looking back across the meadows towards Seave Green
Heading along Cold Moor Lane, this can be very wet and muddy in the winter months
Looking south along the valley as we climbed onto the long ridge of Cold Moor
The bees were making good use of the first flowers on the Bell Heather, you might also be able to see a few Bleaberries!
A view north from the slopes of Cold Moor, the car park is in the col in the centre of the photo
Tim didn't care how muddy the water was, it was hot work running round the moors!
A Red Grouse ...
The long ridge leading to the summit of Cold Moor
Looking across the quiet valley of Raisedale towards Carlton Bank
A close up of the rocky outcrop know as the 'Wainstones'
On the summit of Cold Moor looking east towards Hasty Bank
In the col between Cold moor and Hasty Bank. People doing The Cleveland Way or the C2C would either turn left here to head to Great Broughton or right down into Bilsdale to look for their bed for the night
The Wainstones, a popular spot for climbing
Looking back at the long ridge of Cold Moor that we'd just walked along
Yes, the path does go this way!
Looking out across the flat plain towards a distant Teesside, Roseberry Topping is the small lump on the horizon
Sheena squeezing through boulders
Cold Moor from the top of the Wainstones
Looking west from the Wainstones, on a clear day you can make out Cross Fell from here, about 70 miles away!
Walking along the paved path over Hasty Bank
The steep paved path down to Clay Bank and the car!
