The route of our walk today
Sheffield Pike seen as we headed out of the village on Greenside Road
Birkhouse Moor on the other side of the valley, from the same spot
Looking along the valley with Raise (our target for the day) at the far end. Our planned route would take a zig zag route through the old mine workings on the right of the picture
This time looking back down the valley from the steep path through the old mine workings
A close up view of the head of Ullswater, with lots of cloud on High Street
Looking across to Catstycam from the same point
Reaching the top of the steep path alongside Swart Beck
Above the waterfalls the path levels out and goes through an area with loads of old spoil heaps, it looked almost lunar!
Even though the wind was bitterly cold, Tim couldn't resist taking a quick dip in the beck
Our first proper look at the summit of Raise, our path would take us up to the summit of Sticks Pass and then along a ridge coming in from the right on this picture
The cloud descended by the time we reached Sticks Pass, this picture shows a group of people in front of us ascending the rocky slopes up to the summit of Raise
On the summit of Raise we had a brief bit of sunshine, but it still didn't make it feel any warmer, so Sheena decided it was time for her gloves, but she couldn't quite work out which was left and which was right!
Tim on a very windy and cold Whiteside summit, we had thought about going over onto Helvellyn from here but the conditions were miserable to say the least and there was no view so we turned round and headed down. I took a short piece of video footage as we were leaving the summit, to show how bad the conditions really were whiteside summit video
Another view of Birkhouse Moor, this time seen from the zig zag path down from Whiteside into Keppel Cove
Looking back at the summit of Whiteside, now just about clear of cloud from lower down the path
Looking into Keppel Cove, Catstycam is on the left, then Swirral Edge leading to Helvellyn in the centre (in cloud) with Lower Man on the right just coming out of cloud
Heading back down the path towards Greenside mines, with Sheffield Pike as the back drop
Place Fell viewed from just about the old mine buildings
Heading back to Glenridding the autumnal colours were stunning in the late afternoon sun
